I recently recommended several books as we head into the season of Lent. Many have asked for a copy of the list, which I have furnished below. As you consider setting aside some earthly habits (tv, talk radio, even mealtimes) please know that it spiritually does you no good whatsoever if that time freed up is not devoted over to Christ. The whole purpose and idea is meant to create more opportunity to grow in your relationship with Jesus. I hope these book help as you seek to draw closer to the Lord. God bless you!

3-books

1)    A Hunger for God by John Piper

2)    Forgotten God by Frances Chan

3)    The Mortification of Sin by John Owen

4)    Overcoming Sin & Temptation by John Owen

5)    Generosity by Gordon MacDonald

6)    Treasuring God in our Traditions by Noel Piper

7)    Humility by Andrew Murray

8)    Counterfeit Gods by Timothy Keller

Some other books I am currently reading (more historical in nature) include:

3.2-books

1)    How Rome Fell, Death of a Superpower by Adrian Goldsworthy

2)    Tea with Hezbollah by Ted Dekker

3)    Inside the Revolution by Joel Rosenberg

4)    The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs

Some music favorites now playing on my iPod …

3.3-books

1)    Hillsong United

2)    Brooke Fraser

3)    John Mark McMillian

4)    David Crowder Band

5)    MercyMe

6)    Leeland

7)    Thrice

How about you? What are you filling your mind with? Certainly nothing takes the place of God’s Word, The Bible. And the singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. In addition, any favorite books or good tunes out there? Share some Favs!

  • Thanks Pastor Bob. I would recommend Starfield’s new album too if you get a chance to listen to it.

  • Thank you so much for your recommendations. I have some of these on my wish list and am adding some others now. I appreciate getting an insider’s peek into our Pastor’s shelf and ipod. I love these authors, some choice nectar here to enjoy.

  • Oh I got too excited and forgot to list my favorites.

Recently I have been listening to (and loving) Phil Wickham’s “Heaven and Earth” and anything by Derek Webb or Shane & Shane.

Thanks for that Starfield plug, Mike W…I had not heard them before and enjoy what grooveshark is showing me of them right now.

For books, I am just finished Randy Alcorn’s “Lord Foulgrin’s Letters” which for a fiction book sure had a lot of meat. It has me really pondering the spiritual war around me that I am not paying attention to and probably being an easy target for. Randy’s book “Heaven” is just amazing, and fuels the excitement for what comes after this little life we have.

I am in the middle of reading “Total Church” by Tim Chester & Steve Timmis and the pdf of “Doctrine”, by Mark Driscoll. Both looking to be golden.

  • Guys, thanks for your rad recommendations. I couldn’t agree more. Thumbs Up on Starfield!!! I must confess, the hardest thing about compiling this entry was what NOT to include. Suffice it to say, Everything WICKHAM, Phil & Evan (I think Phil’s latest is the best ever), Everything DRISCOLL (looking fwrd to Doctrine) everything KELLER & everything LEWIS (clive staples that is). Happy late night reading!!!

  • Thank you, Pastor Bob, for providing such solid books. You have one of our all-time favorites on the list: Humility by Andrew Murray (our copy is QUITE worn! having been read numerous times over the years). We have discovered another treasure by Henry Blackaby: Experiencing the Cross (Your Greatest Opportunity for Victory over Sin) – accompanying study guide also available.

  • Dear Pastor Bob,

Thank you for allowing God to use you as a vessel. It is a blessing and a great comfort to know that no matter how distracted life can get, our lord Jesus Christ finds a way to make His presence known in my daily life. I start my morning by tuning to Bridge FM to listen to the word of God preached by you @ six A.M. Christmas week 2011 you recommended a book to read which I believe, and correct me if I am wrong, “The Devil’s Voice” or “The Voice of the Devil”.
God bless and happy new year.
